Massey Ferguson salutes Peacock and Binnington’s 125-year success in farm machinery distribution

Special limited edition MF tractors go on sale for anniversary

Massey Ferguson, a worldwide brand of AGCO, is celebrating the 125th anniversary of one of its longest-serving farm machinery distributors in the UK.

With headquarters now based in Brigg, North Lincs, Peacock and Binnington (P&B) was founded in Hull in 1894. By 1898, it was displaying binders at a local show made by Massey-Harris, forerunners to the present day Massey Ferguson.

Serving famers in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, today P&B sells the full line-up of Massey Ferguson products including tractors, harvesting machinery and materials handling equipment. The company is one of the MF brand’s top four distributors in the UK by volume sales, and scooped the award for the highest number of MF combine harvester sales in the UK in 2018.

In a year of events and activities, the celebrations are being spearheaded by the production of 125 individually-numbered, limited edition Massey Ferguson tractors liveried with 125th anniversary badges and extras such as black bonnets. The tractors are available exclusively to P&B customers who will also receive a glass-etched model tractor with the same number as their limited edition life-size machine. Interest in these special machines is already strong with customers requesting to order a specific number from the limited edition. P&B has also produced a show-stopping 280hp MF 7726 S in stunning gold livery as a flagship for the anniversary events and exhibitions. Special promotions will be run at the company’s depots throughout 2019 and the anniversary theme will be highly visible at local shows.

To get everyone into the anniversary spirit, the year kicked-off with a big celebration party in early January for P&B staff and partners where guests heard about the company’s targets, goals and plans for the 125th year.

“Many congratulations to the P&B team in reaching this 125-year milestone,” says William Judge, Massey Ferguson National Sales Manager UK and Ireland. “P&B is a strong partner and an exceptional ambassador for the MF brand and its values. With an enthusiastic, highly-driven sales force dedicated to Massey Ferguson, the company is forward-thinking and always ready to take on a challenge.”

In 1894, Henry Peacock and John Binnington started their agricultural engineering business in West Street, Hull when mechanised farming was in its infancy. Within two years, a further branch was opened at the Old Foundry, in Brigg, Lincs. After that it was expansion all the way, with new depots opening to meet its growing customer base and the increasing use of farm machinery. P&B was always on-board with the latest developments from the early reapers and threshers, through to the first combine harvesters and tractors, and now, the hi-tech machines of 21st century farming. In 1953, the company was presented with a 50-year service award by Massey-Harris and, in 1958, was appointed North Lincolnshire distributor for the newly-formed Massey Ferguson – the result of the merger of the Canadian Massey-Harris organisation with Coventry tractor-maker Harry Ferguson Limited.

Along with its Brigg HQ, P&B operates branches in Selby, Corringham, Louth and Halsham. Halsham represents the latest expansion to the business - the result of the purchase of Northfield Agricultural Services in September 2018. P&B employs 135 people and reported a combined total turnover of £63.7 million in 2018. Michael Peacock, grandson of Henry Peacock, continues as Chairman today and is still actively involved in the business on a daily basis. Michael’s son, Nicholas is Vice-Chairman – the fourth generation of the family to be part of the P&B operation.

Graham Main, P&B Managing Director comments: “We have expanded over the years but are committed to retaining the traditional values and customer focus of a small, personable business. A strong family-feeling within the group and a really close relationship with customers have been essential factors in the successful journey to our 125th anniversary. As our tagline says, we are proud of our history and excited by our future!”

“Many congratulations to the P&B team in reaching this 125-year milestone,” says William Judge, Massey Ferguson National Sales Manager UK and Ireland.
